SR and SR4 transceiver

 

SR and SR4 transceivers is to connect top-of-rack switches to other parts of the network, such as aggregation switches, middle and end-of-row switches, and leaves in leaf networks. These are typically used as four-channel SR4 with 40G or 100Gb/s bandwidth. For 1GbE-based servers, a 10G or 25Gb/s SR link may be sufficient for the ToR uplink. Multimode optics are well suited for this application. This article will focus on SR and SR4 transceivers.

Two types of transceiver form-factors :

● SFP+– Small Form-factor Pluggable Plus; single-channel transceiver

● QSFP+ –Quad Small Form-factor Pluggable Plus; four-channel transceiver

 

Two types of optical connectors:

● MPO – Multiple Push On; 8-fiber, parallel connector supporting four bi-directional channels

● Duplex LC –Lucent Connector; 2-fiber, parallel connector supporting one bi-directional channel

 

Types of optical fibers:

● Multi-mode is a large core fiber; single-mode a tiny core

● Either multi-mode or single-mode fiber can be used in either MPO or LC connector.

● Three types of multi-mode fibers and reaches: OM2 (30m), OM3 (70m), OM4 (100m+)

● Orange and aqua colors are multi-mode; yellow denotes single-mode

 

A few large operators have generated lots of noise in the transition to single-mode fiber, many enterprise installations still operate as a cluster of small systems, all of which are within 100 meters of multi-mode fiber. Interestingly, multimode fiber is approx. three times more expensive than single mode fiber, However single mode transceivers are 50% to 10 times more expensive than multimode transceivers.

 

Although primarily used to connect top-of-rack switches to other remote switches and storage subsystems in the network, more data center operators are using SR fibers to connect ToR switches to servers and locals due to the continued decline in short-range transceiver prices. Storage - in one rack. This is due to the configuration flexibility provided by the connector optics and the small fiber diameter compared to the DAC wiring. All fiber optic cables that support 32-port switches are less than 2.5 cm in diameter, while fiber optic cables that use copper DAC cables are approximately 100-125 cm.

 

Summary                                   

Connecting a top-of-rack switch to servers and storage subsystems in the same rack is another common method for SR and SR4 optics. SR4 transceivers were only transmitted to another SR4 in 4 channels at a time in the past. The new model divides the four into a single channel that can be connected to different systems and run independently. This is important when the required link coverage is greater than the 3 meter capacity of the DAC copper cable and may span multiple racks. The passive fiber branch cable has a 4-channel MPO connected to the SR4 transceiver at one end and four duplex LC fiber connectors at the other end, connected to four independent SFP transceivers, each with its own 100 Meter fiber.
