Differences between Singlemode (SMF) and Multimode (MMF) for optical transceiver module.
The optical transceiver module is a device that transmits and receives photoelectric signals in an optical fiber transmission system and is used to connect two electrical port devices (such as servers, switches, etc.) with optical fibers. According to different types of optical fibers, optical transceiver modules can be classified into Singlemode (SMF) and Multimode (MMF). UTOPTICAL would like to share differences between these two optical transceiver modules.
一 Introduction
SMF optical transceiver module is used with a single-mode optical fiber. An LD or a narrow-spectrum LED is used as a light source and can transmit extremely high-bandwidth data signals for long transmission distance . MMF optical transceiver module is used with multi-mode optical fibers, LED or lasers as light sources for short transmission distance.
二 Differences between these two optical transceiver modules below:
1. Transmission data rate and distance
SMF and MMF optical transceiver modules can support 10G and 40G transmissions, but transmission distances are different. The maximum transmission distance of MMF optical transceiver module reach 550m, while the transmission distance of a SMF module can reach 10 km, 40 km, 80 km or even more.
2. Performance
In general, SMF optical transceiver can only be used with single-mode optical fibers. Multi-mode optical transceiver modules can only be used with multimode optical fibers.they cannot be mixed together.
3. Power consumption
The power consumption of a multimode optical transceiver module is lower than that of a single-mode module
4. Price
Optical component of a single-mode optical transceiver module is twice as expensive as a multi-mode module, so it is slightly more expensive than a multi-mode optical transceiver module.
三 Points for attention in the process of use below:
Ensure the same for the operating wavelengths of the optical modules at the two ends of the optical fiber link . To reduce the packet loss rate of data, the short-distance transmission application for the multi-mode optical transceiver module, and the long-distance transmission application for the single-mode optical transceiver module; To prevent excessive fiber loss ,please do not greatly bend the optical cable between the optical transceiver modules.
Summary
When planning to build a fiber optic network, the first decision is singlemode fiber or multimode fiber.Emerging demand of higher bandwidth and high speed connections have promoted the growth of fiber optic cable market especially MMF and SMF .
