What is DDM/DOM for Optical Transceiver?
When choosing the fiber optic transceivers for your equipment, you can choose transceiver modules with or without DDM/DOM function. Most of fiber optic transceivers now are support DDM/DOM function. What is DDM/DOM ? This article will focus on DDM/DOM.
What is DDM/DOM ?
DDM refers to Digital Diagnostics Monitoring. It is a technology used in SFP transceivers which gives the end user the ability to monitor real-time parameters of the transceivers. The monitored parameters include optical output power, optical input power, temperature, laser bias current, and transceiver supply voltage etc.
DOM refer to Digital Optical Monitoring.it is an industry wide standard, intended to define a digital interface to access real-time operating parameters such as: Optical Tx power,Optical Rx power, laser bias current, temparature, transceiver supply voltage. Which means, we are now by using DOM capable of performing transceiver monitoring and troubleshooting operations.
Digital Diagnostics Monitoring (DDM )is also known as digital optical monitoring (DOM) which provides a user with critical information concerning the status of the transmitted and received signals. This approach allows for better fault isolation and error detection.
Average Optical Power
The SFF-8472 MSA allows for both average and OMA types of RX power measurement for the RX diagnostic monitor. RX OMA measurements are ideal for Fibre Channel standard applications, which define required receiver sensitivity in terms of OMA.
Transceiver temperature
The transceiver temperature diagnostic read-back allows monitoring of the DMI transceiver’s thermal environment condition.
Transceiver Laser bias current
The laser bias current readings generated by diagnostic monitor are commonly measured by mirroring bias current off of the laser driver circuit.
Transceiver supply voltage
The transceiver voltage diagnostic read-back allows monitoring of the transceiver supply voltage. The measurement point for transceiver voltage monitor is left undefined by SFF-8472 DMI MSA.
Features :
l Monitoring module operating temperature
l Monitoring module operating voltage
l Monitoring module operating current
l Display module factory version.
Via real-time monitoring the module internal operating voltage and temperature, making it possible for the system administrators to discover some potential problems :
l It will breakdown CMOS device If Vcc voltage is too high ; the laser does not work If Vcc voltage is too low.
l It will damage the receiver module if received power is too high
l It will accelerate the aging of the device if Working temperature is too high.
Futhermore, it can monitor the circuit and the performance of the remote transmitters by monitoring the received optical power meter.
Summary
Optical transceivers such as SFP, SFP+, XFP and GBIC support standard DDM/DOM functions, which enable real-time monitoring of modules’ parameters. It simplifies the maintenance work and secures the system’s reliability. optical transceivers with DDM or without DDM are supported to satisfy user needs
