(For reference only)TLP181GB is an optocoupler or optical isolator IC. It comes in 4 pin SMD package as it is designed to use mainly with industrial applications. TLP181GB is used in where isolations needed in digital signa circuits as same as most of other optocouplers. Such as PLC IO cards, data acquisition modules, SMPS feedback circuits, zero crossing detection circuits etc. Lets see what are the key features of the TLP181GB optical isolator IC.

Let’s see the circuit diagram of a input isolation circuit using the TLP181GB optocoupler IC,
As you can see in this circuit we have used 12V DC input signal and 5V DC output signal. The input side is consist of 1.2k resistor to match the voltage of the input LED and limit the current flown through the input LED. In the output side the circuit is configured to output signal in pull up mode. 10k resistor is the pull up resistor. One benefit of the optocouplers like TLP181GB is we can use it to level shift the signals while isolating the input side from the output.
Below image shows how to drive a relay using TLP181GB optocoupler,
As you can see the output relay side is optically isolated by the input MCU side by the TLP181GB optocoupler IC. This means the controlling MCU will not get any back EMF from the high switching rates of the relay due to the inductance of the relay coil. This is good because such back emf can cause the MCU to restart or even burn the MCU completely.
