Description

Diode is a device that offers very low (or zero resistance in case of ideal diode) in one direction and very high (or infinite resistance in case of ideal diode) in other direction. Diode has two terminals called Anode (+) and Cathode (-). Earlier diode was manufactured using vacuum tube but now semiconductor diode is the most commonly used diode type.

1N4148 is a semiconductor signal diode, very popular because its reliability, wide applications and low cost.

Working Principle

Semiconductor diode is also called PN junction diode, because these diodes are created by joining positively and negatively doped pieces of semiconductor, when N and P type materials are joined together a momentarily flow of electors from N type material to P type material occurs due to which a third region is created called depletion region and resulting device is called PN junction diode.

As described earlier diode allow flow of current in only one direction, a diode will allow flow of current if it is forward biased. If anode of the diode is at higher potential than the cathode of the diode, then the diode is said to be forward biased. Current flow through the diode will be approximately zero if it is connected in reverse biased configuration. If anode of the diode is at lesser potential than cathode, the diode is said to be revers biased.

As Rectifier

Rectifier circuits are used to convert alternating current (AC) into direct current (DC), and the heart of every rectifier circuit is a diode. 1N4148 can also be used in rectifier circuits. Since it is a small single diode having maximum continuous forward current rating of 300mA, any rectifier circuit that is designed keeping in view of the maximum rating of the device will work perfectly fine.

Circuit diagram of rectifier circuit using 1N4148 is shown in figure above. Many rectifier configurations are available like half wave rectifier, full wave rectifier and bridge rectifier. Rectifier circuit shown above is bridge rectifier. Output of the bridge rectifier has more average DC voltage and less ripples as compared to half wave rectifier.

Freewheel diode

Small signal diodes like 1N4148 are in use for variety of applications including as protection device. When a diode is connected across an inductive load to prevent the delicate electronics from the transients, especially when inductive load is turned OFF, is called freewheel diode. IN4148 can also be used as freewheel diode. Use of 1N4148 as freewheel diode is shown in the figure below.
