The L6599D is a PWM controller specifically designed for motor control applications using brushless DC motors. Description: The L6599D is a monolithic PWM pulse generator designed to control brushless DC motors. It combines a high voltage high current power stage with a dedicated high speed control circuit. The device includes a Hall effect current sensing circuit, programmable speed regulation and protection functions. It also has pins for connecting speed and direction signals from the external device. Features: -Programmable PWM frequency up to 2.5 MHz. -Hall effect current sensing circuit. -Fault protection features like over-temperature, overload, dead motor, and over-current. -High voltage, high current power stage. -Integrated soft-start circuit. -16 pin SOP package. Applications: The L6599D is ideally suited for controlling Brushless DC (BLDC) motors in demanding applications such as automotive, industrial, and consumer electronics. It can also be used to control actuators, pumps, and other applications requiring brushless DC motors. (For reference only)

L6599D High voltage resonant controller Description

The L6599D is high voltage resonant controller. It is used to set the operating frequency of the resonant converter by using the external capacitor. They are used mostly in oscillators and PFC Controllers. They came in DIP and SO-16 Packages. It contains flip flops, logic gates, transistors, BJT, MOSFET, phototransistor, optocoupler, operational amplifiers and comparators along with RC network.

Pin configuration and their features

1	Css	It is dedicated to soft start. It is normally connected to external capacitor and Rfmin with resistor. It sets time frequency constant and maximum oscillating frequency using RC network.
2	Delay	It is dedicated to delay shutdown in case of over current. The delay is set by RC network.
3	Cf	It is dedicated to timing capacitor which is connected directly to ground and it is charged and discharged by Rfmin pin.
4	Rfmin	It is used as oscillator frequency setting at minimum level. It provides a reference voltage of 2V.
5	Stby	It is used as operation threshold for burst hold. It sense voltage for feedback control and goes to idle state if it is lower than reference voltage.
6	Isen	It is used for input for sensing current. It sense average current.
7	Line	It is used as line sensing input. It is used for performing AC or DC brownout protection
8	Dis	It is latched pin for shutting down the IC. The pin is connected with the comparator that when it exceeds designated voltage (1.85 Volts) the IC gets shutdown.
9	PFC_Stop	It is used as ON/OFF control of PFC Controller.
10	Gnd	It is used as ground.
11	Lvg	It is lower side voltage gate for driving lower part half bridge’s MOSFET.
12	V_cc	It is used as the supply voltage.
13	N.C.	It is not connected pin. It is used for isolating high voltage with the IC pin.
14	Out	Output Pin. It is used as floating ground
15	Hvg	It is high side voltage gate for driving upper part half bridge’s MOSFET.
16	Vboot	It is used as supply voltage for bootstrap capacitor

L6599D Working Principle

Applications of L6599D

L6599D is normally used in LCD and switch mode power supply. Among them there are some prominent applications.

1. Oscillators

They are used as oscillators and they are controlled by RC network in which Cf charges (located at pin 3) and discharges by the current that is coming through the node of Rfmin connected with Rfmin resistor and phototransistor at pin 4.

2. Soft Start For Resonant Converters

It is used as soft start for resonant converters. Soft start is basically achieved by shifting the operational frequency from the high level till control loop takes place. RC network is used for this purpose and resonant freqekuncy resistor is placed in parallel with resistor for soft start (Rss) to determine the frequency initially. The Csks Capacitor (Capacitor soft start) is charged. When it is 2V which is equivalent to 2V reference voltage then the current goes to 0 in Rss as it then behaves like a short circuit. It takes around 5 time constraints then for output voltage to reach the regulated value of the circuit until the control loop takes place.
