78M05 or 7805 is one of the most used voltage regulators among the hobby electronic enthusiasts. As you might known before 78M05 is capable of regulating up to 24V DC in to 5V DC with few or none external components. 78M05 comes from a voltage regulator family called 78 series. So in 78M05 78 is the series of the regulator and the last two numbers indicates the output voltage of that particular voltage regulator. In 78M05 case 05 means output voltage of 5V. So 78M12 means output voltage of 12V, 78M09 means output voltage of 9V etc. 78M05 comes in various packages like TO-220 THT package D-PAK SMD package and several other types as well. Also, 78M05 is manufactured by various manufactures as well.
Let’s identify some of the key features of the 78M05 5V regulator IC.

78M05 is a very versatile IC. As mentioned before 78M05 can be used with very few or without external components. If you supply 7V DC to 24V DC to the input pin of the 78M05 voltage regulator you will get regulated 5V DC output from it’s output pin. This is the most basic setup for the 78M05 voltage regulator. However, we can use two filter capacitors parallel with the input and output to reduce noise and ripples. Such circuit with 78M05 voltage regulator and two capacitors is given in the below circuit diagram.
As you can see there is only two external components in this circuit. Values for the capacitors are can be chosen according to the datasheet. If the input supply is with high noise levels it would be better to use high capacity capacitors for the input side to keep the noises to a lower level. In a low noise circuit you can use the 78M05 regulator without any capacitors. Given below is a actual circuit setup using 78M05 voltage regulator.
This is setup on a breadboard as mentioned above you can see there are two filter capacitors used in this circuit as well. In here there is a LED to indicate the output voltage and also there are two seven segment voltage meters to indicate the voltage values of the input and the output. As the conclusion 78M05 is one of the most used voltage regulators as 5V is one of the standard logic voltage levels.
